FirstPost got it right: “Happy New Year review: It is SRK in Ocean’s 11 re-written by baboons”. Yes, thats a fairly accurate description of the film!

While the cast of corny characters monkey around, while we munch on pop corn instead of peanuts and while Farah Khan vomits utter nonsense trying to ape a set of Hollywood films, the film made for, of and by lesser evolved primates, it seems, will make SRK a lot of money.

And thats the problem and thats the clear and present danger for the commercial genre of Indian cinema. Fun, light, entertainers are not bad in themselves. They are a must for the film industry and most of us love, even need the two odd hours of time pass. However, even that genre of films must be required to have minimum levels of sense and maximum level of nonsense. Sadly these make plenty of money and so the incentive to create newer templates of fun or be creative in the prevalent one is very little. And the industry stagnates and the Directors and Producers feel vindicated.

Oh okay, there have been worse films ( for example Ram Gopal Verma’s AAG). HNY is being copiously criticized by me because its a Shah Rukh Khan film. We expect more from him even after Ra One. Come on Shah Rukh, surely you don’t don’t want to be remembered in the same breath as Sajid and Farah Khan. You have been an icon and done some great work. It may be late but its not too late yet. Now that you have had a happy year (and made money), make a new years’s resolution. Happy New Year in advance.

( PS: count the sheer number of Hind films posters with the cast sporting aviator glasses! You will be amazed!)
