Baby
The only thing I didn’t like about the film Baby, was the title Baby. Well, actually not the only thing, but pretty much so.
The film has been banned in Pakistan, and calls out muslim terrorists pretty clearly, by name, flags, locations etc. So be it. Let the politicos and the twitterati of both side fight it out, like they did for PK, you and I need to enjoy the films and creative works that need no censure.

Back to the film. The good thing about Baby, is its not a Bollywood template film, although ostensibly it may seem so. Well, its a typical Hollywood film.
In Baby, we have an action thriller film but with no heroines, songs, item numbers, platitudes nor any over the top villains. Moreover theres on glitz, glamour nor melodrama. It leaves behind all the standard and “insurance seeking” behaviour of Bollywood producers and directors who stuff every possible element for a few bucks more and courageously builds an entertainer. Its fast paced, set in a real context, is no non sense, stays true to its mission and ends as one would expect. As Anupama Chopra rightly said if films could have a love baby, this would be the love child of Zero Dark Thity and Argo.
One would also argue that its “too Hollywood”, an Indian film directors stamp and style that would have made been good.
Akshay’s straight face determined look works, the repetitive music actually enhances the thrill, increases the tempo, the characters look their roles, technical finesse is high…all the stuff one takes for granted in every Hollywood film. One hopes Indian producers make more such entertainers rather than losing all cinmatic integrity for a fistful of rupees.
